Super typhoon stalls long steel trading in Guangdong

The strongest typhoon in 2025 to hit China is on its way to bring torrential rainfall and super strong gusts to the country's southern coastal regions in the next few days, posing pressure on local trading and consumption of long steel products, Mysteel Global has learned.

Super Typhoon Ragasa is forecasted to make landfall in South China's Guangdong province from midday to late night on Wednesday, according to a lead forecaster at the Guangdong meteorological observatory.

To assess the impact of the typhoon on the regional construction steel market, Mysteel conducted a survey among 20 steel traders across cities in Guangdong province on Tuesday.

The survey found that 16 traders have closed their steel trading businesses or halted cargo deliveries as requested by local authorities, citing work stoppages at construction sites and suspended steel orders ahead of the typhoon's arrival, while only 4 traders reported that they were able to receive orders.

For instance, a surveyed trader in Shenzhen city said that a local construction project temporarily stopped ordering finished steel cargoes, while another trader in Zhongshan city reported transport disruptions despite steady order intentions.

The spot trading volume among major trading houses in Guangzhou city under Mysteel's tracking slumped to 1,720 tonnes/day on September 23, down by a huge 66.2% or 3,380 t/d from Monday.

Guangdong authorities raised the province's wind emergency response to the highest level at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, and major cities like Guangzhou, Shenzhen and Zhuhai also announced citywide suspensions of classes, work, production, transportation and business operation on the same day, as reported.

The direct impact of Ragasa on local steel trading and downstream construction work is expected to ease on Thursday, Mysteel Global predicts.
