Japanese battery manufacturer Panasonic Energy is reportedly targeting the commercialisation of lithium metal batteries by the end of 2027.
The company says it intends to provide “world-leading level” production capacity, although details on volume and potential factory locations were not unveiled. The technology, which replaces conventional anode with lithium metal, is being pursued by a range of manufacturers, including South Korea’s SK On.
Lithium metal batteries are known for their lightweight design, high energy density and ability to operate across a wide temperature range. They adopt metallic lithium as the anode, while a lithium insertion material is used as the cathode. A polymer-based solid electrolyte separates these.
Panasonic reportedly says that the technology could deliver a 25% increase in battery capacity, boosting the Tesla Model Y’s range by nearly 90 miles at current battery pack size.
