Indian rebar sees volatility amid uncertainty

The Indian rebar market remains volatile with no clear direction, notes Kallanish.

Prices dropped at the start of week before seeing a marginal uptick on Wednesday and Thursday. Excessive rains are hampering purchases, while liquidity issues are keeping buyers cautious.

Some demand was seen in few pockets of eastern and northern states, but western and southern regions remained largely inactive. Overall, buyers are waiting for rains to subside before committing to fresh purchases.

Traders highlight that the seasonal slowdown, coupled with the ongoing 15-day “pitr-paksh” period, is limiting buying to immediate needs.

In Mumbai, 12mm rebar is assessed at INR 46,000-47,000/tonne ($520-531) ex-stockist, while in Raipur, offers hover at INR 41,000-41,500/t.

Sellers are avoiding further discounts despite muted demand to protect margins.

A Mumbai distributor comments: “Demand is soft. Look at the season. We are halfway through September, and it has not stopped raining yet. Buyers are waiting rains to stop; sellers are unable to cut on prices expecting that demand may come soon.”

A Delhi trader adds: “We will be seeing festive season soon from 23 September. Demand may start coming from then. I am positive that October is going to be much better in terms of sales against September. There is news all around that demand will rebound in last quarter of 2025 and I am wishing the same.”

Producers are maintaining a controlled supply despite subdued demand.

Secondary mills remain under pressure and may adjust production schedules to avoid a stock build-up.
