The Vietnamese domestic rebar market has remained stable despite stagnant demand, Kallanish notes. Prices are moving at similar levels to last month, mill sources say.
“The market is moving sideways because of the rainy season and demand is slow,” a Vietnamese mill manager says. “The international steel market isn’t that strong either.” While demand is sluggish, there is “not much room for prices to go down” because of high raw material costs, he adds.
Vietnamese mill Hoa Phat announced its 12-32mm diameter rebar price at VND 13,460-13,510/kg ($510-512/tonne) ex-works, excluding VAT, effective 3 September. The premium for 10mm diameter is VND 100/kg. “Prices [have been] quite stable for a while,” another mill manager says.
In addition to the rainy season affecting demand, the US dollar has been strengthening against the VND. “Scrap prices have increased,” he notes.
Hoa Phat’s 6mm/8mm diameter wire rod was also set last week at VND 13,260-13,310/kg or $502-504/t, excluding VAT.
“We expect them [Hoa Phat] to increase the price this week for longs, but that seems hard,” the second manager says. It is still raining heavily, he adds.
Indonesian mill Dexin Steel has meanwhile noticeably kept its wire rod export prices unchanged at $490/t fob since 14 August.
A Jakarta trader says the mill has switched to producing more slab and less billet. He hears that its hot rolled coil export sales have improved to countries including Vietnam where prices have lifted.
