The revamp of size extras in some northwestern European rebar mills’ pricing could lead to the adoption of flat rates on effective delivered prices, Kallanish hears from market participants.
With the new extras lists – the first amendments in ten years – some of the previous price distinctions between straight and coiled bar have become blurry (see separate article).
German mills could increasingly prefer to quote delivered carriage-paid-to (cpt) prices, as most foreign suppliers do, one manager at an eastern German distributor explains. One German mill that produces rebar in addition to special bar quality has already done this for many years, that distributor notes.
In Austria, German mills have already taken that step for rebar in coil, for years offering quotes on a delivered, cpt basis. Austrian buyers are accustomed to that distinction.
Current base prices have hardly moved for many weeks. For straight bar, levels are hovering at around €350/tonne ($408/t), sources say. The new size extra by some mills of €280/t for 12mm diameter material does not seem to be playing a role yet, as delivered values have not gone up notably. Delivered offers stand at €610-615/t from domestic mills. Offers from Poland to eastern Germany are at slightly below €600/t.
For coiled rebar, the price would be the customary premium of €20/t higher. Although earlier this year some buyers reported temporary shortages of coil, this is not the case now.
“You can get everything you want,” one buyer asserts.
