Daily crude steel output among the member mills of the China Iron and Steel Association (CISA) to average 2.11 million tonnes/day during August 11-20, higher by 2% or 41,000 t/d from early-August, according to the latest release from the association on August 25. Meanwhile, the mid-August figure was also higher by 6.1% on year, the CISA statistics show.
Based on the same dataset, CISA estimated that daily crude steel output among both member and non-member mills during August 11-20 averaged 2.68 million tonnes, edging up by a negligible 0.1% from early-August.
The main reason for the increasing output is the healthy profit from steel sales, encouraging steelmakers to maintain steady production. Mysteel's weekly assessment among the 247 Chinese steelmakers it regularly monitors showed that on August 22, about 160 steelmakers earned from steel sales in the previous week, accounting for 64.94% of the sampled mills.
In addition, many steelmakers in northern China including in the nation's steel hub of Tangshan lifted production during the period, having received instructions earlier from local governments to suspend production over August 25 to September 3 to ensure good air quality, as reported. This may also contribute to the uplifting production.
According to CISA's statistics, the total stocks held by CISA member mills mounted significantly by 4% or 600,000 tonnes from early-August to reach 15.67 million tonnes over August 11-20. Despite the rise, the figure was still down by 4.7% compared to the corresponding period last year.
The rising inventories was mainly attributed to increasing steel output and lackluster demand. Spot sales remained weak during the steel off season, while scorching weather and torrential rainfall continued to disrupt outdoor construction activities during the ten-day period. Daily spot trading volume of long steel items comprising rebar, wire rod and bar-in-coil among the 237 trading houses under Mysteel's tracking over August 11-20 declined by 0.84% or 847 tonnes/day to average 99,761 t/d from early-August.
