Billet prices tumble in China, ASEAN

Billet prices have ticked lower during the week in China and ASEAN, Kallanish notes.

A recent deal for Chinese 5sp 150mm billet is heard to have closed at $457-458/tonne cfr Manila during the week through 22 August, market sources say. A previous order concluded a week earlier closed at $465/t cfr.

Offers are now prevailing at $455/t cfr Manila. Buyers are cautious amid the softening in the market. “We will probably have a better feel by next week. For this week, customers aren’t exactly jumping up and down from excitement because of the price drops,” a Manila trader said last Friday.

In Indonesia, rerollers are receiving Chinese 3sp 150mm billet offers at $455/t cfr Jakarta. For 5sp, the offers would be around $460/t cfr. Offers for 5sp billet were $468/t cfr around 15 August.

Indonesia’s Dexin Steel is offering 3sp 150mm base billet at $450/t fob, down $5/t since 14 August.

Kallanish assessed 5sp/ps or Q275 120/125/130mm square billet last Friday at $460/t cfr Manila, down $7.5/t on-week.

In China, 3sp 150mm billet dropped by around $9/t week-on-week to $440/t last Friday while the most traded October 2025 rebar contract on Shanghai Futures Exchange fell by CNY 69/t ($9.6/t).

Trading sources in China said they were seeing improved export sales during the week through 22 August. "Export transactions at this price are good," a trader says. The price of 5sp billet prices was $5/t higher than that of 3sp.
