Peru eyes Latin America’s first battery production plant

Peru is evaluating a potential lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery production plant in the department of Moquegua, which would be the first such facility in Latin America.

Even though the region is rich in battery minerals, most of the output is exported due to a lack of midstream and downstream capacity, Kallanish writes. For example, around 58% of the world’s lithium is contained in the so-called “lithium triangle” across Argentina, Bolivia, and Chile, but experts say a lack of local demand is directing resources abroad.

The Peruvian government says that investment firms ANG Perú, Phoenix Capital and Andes Pacífica are interested in building an LFP battery factory in Ilo, an industrial centre with special economic development zone status located on the Pacific coast. The city has six port terminals as well as an integrated network of national and international highways.

The proposed facility would supply global clients in the automotive and technology industries, sourcing inputs such as copper, iron, and manganese from Peruvian mines. The project would also include technology transfer and local human capital development.

No details on the projected capacity, required investment, and timelines were shared publicly. Phoenix Capital and Andes Pacífica were contacted for comment. ANG Perú could not be reached.
