Chinese steelmaker Tianjin Rockcheck is installing two 5MW anion exchange membrane (AEM) electrolysers at its plant for the production of hydrogen.
It is designed to produce 1,000 normal cubic metre/hour of hydrogen. The produced hydrogen will be supplied to Rockcheck’s blast furnaces, Kallanish notes.
The equipment supplier is Singapore-based Horizon Fuel Cell Technologies’ subsidiary HET Hydrogen.
The commissioning date is targeted for late 2025. If successful, Horizon said it would be the first AEM electrolyser to be put into use in the world.
“As AEM electrolysis is still an emerging technology in the hydrogen industry, the 10MW capacity is likely to be the world’s largest AEM project,” Horizon adds.
In terms of equipment, there will also be a 17MW building-integrated photovoltaic device that uses solar power as the energy source for AEM to ensure the production of green hydrogen.
Horizon estimates its modules can produce hydrogen at a cost as low as $2/kilogram.
Tianjin Rockcheck is the largest company in Tianjin, one of the four municipalities directly under the Central Government, according to its operating income. It now has capacities for 2.25 million tonnes/year of iron and 3.85m t/y of crude steel.
