Egypt eyes localising automotive sheet production

Egypt’s Minister of Industry and Transport, Kamel Al-Wazir, has held discussions with domestic steelmakers and automotive manufacturers over the localisation of automotive sheet metal production. The move is a core element of the state’s broader industrial strategy aimed at reducing imports and increasing local content, Kallanish notes.

According to local media reports citing an Egyptian Cabinet statement, Al-Wazir emphasised that localising production of automotive sheet metal is a top national priority. The initiative will support the country’s shift towards industrial self-sufficiency.

The minister laid out a two-pillar strategy to drive the initiative forward. The first focuses on establishing a sustainable legislative and incentive framework, supported by clear implementation plans, to attract long-term investment. The second aims to identify vehicle components that can be realistically manufactured domestically, backed by a skilled workforce and defined timelines, reports Daily News Egypt.

Al-Wazir noted that Egypt already exports several vehicle components, underscoring the potential of the local industry. He stressed that localising sheet metal production is a vital first step to expanding domestic manufacturing of other auto parts, opening doors to future industrial partnerships. During the meeting, discussions covered production methods, technical specifications, required quality standards and production volumes.
