China’s CC7 to build Hyphen’s 3-GW green ammonia plant

Hyphen Hydrogen Energy has contracted China National Chemical Engineering & Construction Corporation Seven (CC7) to build its 3-gigawatt (GW) green hydrogen and ammonia project in Namibia, Kallanish learns.

Hyphen signed the front-end engineering and design (FEED) and engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contracts for the project with CC7, a subsidiary of state-owned China National Chemical Engineering Company, in Beijing this week.

Namibian-registered Hyphen is a joint venture between German renewables developer Enertrag and UK-based Nicholas Holdings. Last December, the Namibian government acquired a 24% stake in the company.

The project, estimated to cost over $10 billion, is expected to produce 2.4 million tonnes/year of green ammonia. According to the project’s website, the 1m t/y Phase 1 is planned to begin production in 2028, scaling to full potential by the end of 2030. It is expected to create 15,000 construction jobs and 3,000 permanent jobs. Most of the green ammonia is planned to be exported to Europe, Japan and South Korea.

Hyphen ceo Marco Raffinetti says the project will “strongly promote” Namibia’s development into a green energy hub in Africa and contribute to its economic growth. He adds that the Namibian government sees “great importance” in the project’s development.

In 2023, Hyphen secured €5 million ($5.4m) funding from the Development Bank of Southern Africa (DBSA) for the project’s development.
