Indian steelmaker ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel (AMNS) announced that it has been licensed by the Central Road Research Institute (CRRI) to utilize its technology to promote the use of steel slag aggregate in road construction. This technology processes steel slag, a byproduct of steelmaking, at AMNS's steel plant in Hazira, Gujarat, and transforms it into a durable building material for so-called "slag roads."
AMNS claimed that using treated slag for road paving not only saves up to 30 to 40% in construction costs but also offers a lifespan three times that of asphalt roads, significantly reducing ongoing maintenance costs. Furthermore, these roads offer high strength and excellent weather resistance, making them suitable for diverse terrains, including coastal and mountainous areas.
As a recycled industrial waste material, the promotion of slag technology will contribute to resource recycling and sustainable infrastructure development, demonstrating AMNS's long-term commitment to environmentally friendly engineering.
