The US steel industry is experiencing a sharp rebound in 2025, driven by renewed trade protections and targeted support for domestic manufacturing, Kallanish learns from a White House press release.
“US steelmakers are proving that strong leadership and protective tariffs are the keys to revitalising American manufacturing,” the release states, citing positive reports from Q2 earnings calls.
Ohio-based Cleveland-Cliffs announced record steel shipments in the second quarter. “We have started to see the positive impact that tariffs have on domestic manufacturing,” said Lourenco Goncalves, chief executive (see Kallanish 22 July), adding that the resurgence of the automotive sector is likely to continue, supported by a strengthening domestic steel industry.
Indiana-based Steel Dynamics reported a 39% increase in operating income and a 19% rise in adjusted Ebitda for its second quarter results, reflecting strong market demand and improved margins (see Kallanish 24 July).
Meanwhile, North Carolina-based Nucor projects second-quarter earnings to be approximately four times higher than the previous quarter, underscoring the momentum building across the industry.
Nucor’s quarterly earnings call is scheduled for Tuesday 29 July.
