China’s synthetic graphite exports grow in June

Chinese exports of synthetic graphite reached 51.153 tonnes in June, a 12% year-on-year increase, but a slight 2% decline compared to May, Kallanish reports. 

Customs data shows that the Netherlands was the biggest buyer of synthetic graphite from China, with volumes amounting to 7,942t last month – a rise of 24% y-o-y. Shipments to the country accounted for roughly 15.5% of total synthetic graphite exports in June.

Following were India and Japan, the second and third largest importers, accounting for 12.9% and 11.4% of total exports, with shipments surging by 22% and 28% y-o-y. Notably, Turkey’s purchases have jumped 471% y-o-y, ranking fourth at 4,081t. South Korea bought 3,200t, a decrease of 22% y-o-y.

Based on Chinese customs data, exports totalled CNY 407.74 million ($56.83m), suggesting an average synthetic graphite price in the month of CNY 7,971/t ($1,111/t). 

Meanwhile, China’s natural graphite flake exporters saw export volume drop 28% y-o-y to 5,333t. Japan, the top destination, imported 2,136t, an on-year rise of 41%. Other significant importers were South Korea, Germany, and Iran, with a 31%, 34%, and 72% declines in purchase volume y-o-y. The fifth largest buyer Netherlands increased its imports 900% y-o-y.

For spherical graphite, which is often used as raw material for anodes, exports totalled 2,533t in June. This is 43% lower than in the same period last year.
