China retained its leading position in the global shipbuilding industry during the first half of 2025, with its output, new orders, and order backlog accounting for 51.7%, 68.3%, and 64.9% of global totals respectively, all measured in deadweight tons (DWT), according to the latest data released by the China Association of the National Shipbuilding Industry (CANSI).
During January-June, Chinese shipbuilders completed vessel output totaling 24.1 million DWT, representing a 3.5% on-year dip. Of this, 89.6% was destined for export markets, CANSI noted.
New orders received by domestic yards over the six months amounted to 44.3 million DWT, down 18.2% on year. Export orders comprised 89.5% of the total.
By the end of June, the order backlog at Chinese shipyards stood at 234.5 million DWT, a sharp increase of 36.7% compared with the same period in 2024. Export orders made up 93.2% of the total backlog, according to the association.
In value terms, China's ship exports during H1 amounted to $24.5 billion, the CANSI data found.
