Chinese battery swapping and skateboard chassis solution provider U Power will provide battery-swapping technology to Beijing Foton’s commercial electric vehicles, Kallanish learns.
The parties have recently signed an MOU to promote electric heavy trucks, buses, and vans compatible with battery swapping in Southeast Asia, South America, Hong Kong SAR, and Macau SAR markets.
Under the deal, U Power will develop and test battery-swapping stations to serve electric vehicle models and connect vehicles with its battery bank ecosystem. Beijing Foton will gather and share performance data such as battery charging, health, and capacity records.
“This partnership marks another significant step forward in U Power’s strategy of expanding OEM partner base. Through joint promotional and sales efforts, U Power expects to accelerate the establishment of a comprehensive battery-swapping and battery-bank ecosystem in several of its existing key markets,” says Johnny Lee, ceo and chairman of U Power. “We look forward to a strong collaboration with Beijing Foton to strategically expand our global footprint and increase our market share.”
U Power reached a cooperation agreement on skateboard chassis with American start-up electric vehicle company Olympian Motors in January 2024.
The so-called Powered by U Power business model provides advanced skateboard chassis technology and intelligent electric vehicle solutions to OEMs. This helps shorten the product development cycle by 12-18 months, enabling electric vehicles to reach the market quicker.
According to U Power, its customised vehicle chassis products (Class 3) have also been delivered to other US customers last year, opening a new chapter in overseas sales. The international expansion offers global customers more diverse platform options for high-performance electric vehicles.
The companies did not disclose when a definitive agreement could be reached.
