Russian steelmaker Severstal has begun a major overhaul of blast furnace No. 4 "Vologzhanka" at the company’s key asset, Cherepovets Steel Mill (CherMK), as part of its ongoing long-term modernisation program, Kallanish notes.
With an annual pig iron output of 2.4 million tonnes, BF-4 is the third-largest at CherMK.
The furnace is scheduled to restart in the third quarter following the overhaul that began Monday. Severstal has prepared a stock of steel slabs to avoid disruptions in finished product output and to maintain customer delivery schedules during the outage.
The project is valued at 22 billion roubles ($278 million).
The overhaul will enable an increased use of iron ore pellets and reduced solid fuel consumption, improving both efficiency and environmental impact. The furnace will be equipped with advanced aspiration systems and automatic valve controls to reduce dust emissions and improve workplace conditions.
Key repair operations include replacing the bell-less top charging system, cooling systems, refractory lining, hot-blast stoves, casting yard, burdening system and gas cleaning units.
The work is being carried out by Severstal’s internal teams, with Domnaremont Center as the general contractor and Severstal-Proekt as the chief designer. SSM-Tyazhmash is involved in repairing heavy equipment, the company states.
