Vietnam's steel trade volume declines in May

Vietnam's iron and steel trade volumes fell month-on-month in May, leading to a further contraction on a year-on-year basis through May, Kallanish notes.

May's iron and steel imports declined 6.2% m-o-m to 1.29 million tonnes, taking the volume in the first five months of this year down 7.7% to 6.41mt, according to Vietnam Customs preliminary data.

The decrease in Japanese exports, down 26.7% month-on-month to 195,074t, accounted for nearly 84% of the total decline.

Its largest supplier, China, saw shipments to Vietnam fall 2.2% m-o-m to 702,586t in May. Chinese HRC with width not exceeding 1,880mm now is facing 19.38-27.83% anti-dumping duties and Vietnamese producers have asked that 1,900-2,000mm width Chinese HRC be included in an ongoing AD case (see Kallanish passim).

In contrast, Indonesia's exports spiked 30.9% m-o-m to 177,520t in May after rising 20% in the previous month.

Meanwhile, the scrap imports slumped 23.7% versus the earlier month to 500,184t in May, while the year-to-date volume remained 27.6% higher on-year at 2.54mt.

Vietnam exported 892,643t iron and steel in the reporting month, down 18.4% m-o-m and achieved 14.2% lower year-to-date exports at 4.73mt. The monthly decline was mainly caused by a sharp drop in exports to India, which slumped around 54% m-o-m to 78,133t in May.
