Dongfeng Nissan Passenger Vehicle Company, the Chinese joint venture between Dongfeng and Japan’s Nissan, has inked a strategic cooperation agreement with CATL.
The battery giant says in a recent statement that it will prioritise the use of its advanced technologies, ultra-fast charging solutions, the CATL integrated intelligent chassis (CIIC), and 800-volt high-voltage platforms in upcoming Dongfeng models.
By 2026, several new models equipped with co-developed battery systems will be available on the Chinese market, Kallanish learns. In the future, the parties intend to expand their collaboration to “accelerate the popularisation of new energy vehicles,” CATL adds, indicating demand is set to continue to grow in China and India.
Nissan is in survival mode with plummeting sales and increasing debt. As part of its recovery measures, it will cut 20,000 jobs globally and close seven plants. In April, the company vowed to invest an additional CNY 10 billion ($1.38 billion) in China by the end of 2026, through the Dongfeng Nissan JV.
The move seeks to reverse declining sales with the launch of 10 new vehicles by mid-2027, primarily focusing on EVs. During the Shanghai auto show, the company premiered the plug-in hybrid version of the Frontier Pro, its first electrified pick-up truck, and the Dongfeng Nissan N7 all-electric sedan. These are likely the first models to feature CATL’s batteries.
According to reports, Nissan has indicated that Dongfeng could help the company to secure the future of its Sunderland plant in the UK through joint production.
CATL has also recently signed an MOU with Nissan’s compatriot Honda. Their cooperation deal includes lithium iron phosphate batteries, cell-to-body integration technology and supply chain optimisation.
