Global crude steel production among the 69 countries under World Steel Association (WSA) monitoring declined by 0.4% year on year to 624.4 million tonnes in the first four months of 2025, according to the association's latest report released on May 22.
In April alone, crude steel output from these countries totaled 155.7 million tonnes, down 0.3% year on year and 6.3% month on month, Mysteel Global calculated based on WSA statistics.
China, the world's largest steel-producing country, registered a modest 0.4% on-year increase in crude steel output during January-April, reaching 345.4 million tonnes. Of this, 86 million tonnes were produced in April, remaining unchanged year on year but down 7.3% month on month.
India, which ranks second globally in steel production, continued its upward trajectory. The country's April crude steel output rose by 5.6% year on year to 12.9 million tonnes, and by 6.9% over the four-month period to 53.2 million tonnes.
India was the only country among the top ten steelmaking countries to record year-on-year growth in output for both April and the January-April period, Mysteel Global noted.
Conversely, other major producers including Japan, Russia, South Korea, Germany and Brazil all reported year-on-year declines in crude steel production for both April and the first four months of the year. Germany, in particular, saw steep reductions, with output falling by 10.1% in April and by 11.9% over the four-month span, according to WSA data.
