New slab output planned in Indonesia

A new mini blast furnace project will commence operations in October in Indonesia, Kallanish notes. The plant is part of an existing steelworks located in Tsingshan Morowali Industrial Park on Sulawesi Island.

The Guangxi Guixin Steel Group-Tsingshan Group joint venture 1,280 cubic metre blast furnace is scheduled to reach commercial production of around 1.5 million tonnes/year of slab in January 2026. The slab will be partially used for captive consumption at a hot strip mill in the vicinity and also be sold to both domestic and export markets.

Guangxi Guixin and Tsingshan are shareholders in a 4m t/y 1,780mm hot strip mill, PT Guang Ching De Metal Rolling, which was commissioned last September and is located within the same complex. The other shareholder is Dexin Steel which has been supplying the strip mill with slab.

The shareholding of the strip mill is roughly 50% held by Guangxi Guixin, with the other two companies equally sharing the remainder.

Dexin started running its no.4 slab caster in August 2024 and is producing around 3-4m t/y of slab depending on demand, informed sources say.

The company completed its first-phase expansion project, which saw capacity raised to 6m t/y of iron and 7m t/y of crude steel last September.
