Poland's JSW declares yet another force majeure

Jastrzebska Spolka Weglowa (JSW) has declared yet another force majeure after a fire at its Budryk mine that occurred on 7 May. The Polish coking coal miner anticipates a resultant production loss in 2025 of 345,000 tonnes, Kallanish notes.

As a result of the incident, JSW had to temporarily seal off the endangered area covering the decommissioned longwall B-3 and the mined longwall B-4, seam 402.

This follows a methane ignition at JSW’s Knurow-Szczyglowice mine in January, which led to the sealing off of the affected area and estimated production loss in 2025 of 800,000t.

The latest incident represents JSW’s fifth force majeure since December 2023, which kicked off 18 months beset by production problems.

The firm turned to a PLN 7.28 billion ($1.87 billion) consolidated net loss in 2024 versus a PLN 997 million profit a year earlier, while revenue dropped 24% on-year to PLN 11.33 billion.

Coking coal sales on the merchant market fell 10% on-year in 2024 to 5.7 million tonnes, with production down 9% to 9.9mt.

It had planned to produce 15.3mt combined of coking and thermal coal last year but ended up with output of 12.3mt.
