China’s BYD has started construction of a new passenger electric vehicle factory in Southeast Asia, set to start assembly in Cambodia by year-end, Kallanish reports.
The EV giant held a groundbreaking ceremony at the Sihanoukville Special Economic Zone, in Cambodia’s coastal Preah Sihanouk province, on 28 April. With an area of 120,000 square metres, the plant will have a capacity of 10,000 EVs per year.
According to reports, the plan is to initially assemble all-electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles from completely knocked-down (CKD) kits imported from China.
A statement by the special economic zone says BYD has received nearly 1,000 EV orders in Cambodia in the first quarter of the year, “showing recognition of BYD and Chinese technology and products.”
The manufacturer, which is also a leading producer of batteries, has pledged to set up a training centre in the country to train the local workforce.
When operational, the plant will be BYD’s second facility in the region. Last July, it opened an EV production plant in Thailand with an annual capacity of 150,000 vehicles. The company is expected to open a plant with similar capacity in Indonesia’s West Java province by year-end.
