Japanese carmaker Toyota is the world’s top seller but remains a laggard in the battery electric vehicle (BEV) and plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) segments.
Total 2024 sales across its brands, including Daihatsu, Hino, and Lexus, recorded the largest number for any company despite sliding by 4% year-on-year to 10.8 million units. Group production dropped by 8% to 10.6m vehicles, Kallanish Power Materials writes.
Hybrid electric vehicle (HEV) sales increased by 21% to 4.1m units, while mild hybrid electric vehicle (MHEV) deliveries grew over three-fold to 94,810 units. Both types of vehicles combine a traditional combustion engine with electrified elements.
In the plug-in category, PHEV and BEV sales rose by 23% to 153,829 units and by 34% to 139,892 units, respectively. Together, they account for just 2.7% of total group deliveries.
Fuel cell electric vehicle (FCEV) sales declined by 55% to 1,778 units, as demand for hydrogen-powered cars is hampered by high operating costs and extremely limited infrastructure. Toyota, which is undergoing a class action lawsuit in California over alleged “misleading” communication around its FCEV Mirai, has now introduced a 70% discount for the Mirai XLE model in the US state.
