BYD’s Indonesia plant construction on track: official

Chinese electric vehicle giant BYD intends to complete construction of its $1 billion manufacturing plant in Indonesia, a representative said Monday.

Speaking at a televised interview monitored by Kallanish Power Materials, BYD Indonesia president Eagle Zhao said the company’s activities to localise manufacturing are progressing smoothly and on track. “We will keep our commitment, which is by end-2025, we will complete the construction works,” he said in a joint interview with Reuters and CNBC Indonesia.

Although he said the priority is to meet domestic demand, BYD Indonesia will also supply the export market. The plant in Subang, West Java, is planned to produce 150,000 EVs per year. Productio is set to start in 2026.

In December, the Indonesian government said that from 2025, BYD BEVs would be exempted from import taxes, while taxes on hybrids would also be reduced. The move reflects the company’s commitment to promoting local production and sales of EVs.

Jakarta expects to have 400,000 EVs on the road this year, with 20% of them being manufactured/assembled locally.

BYD is said to hold 36% of the Indonesian EV market share.
