Panhua to commission Philippine GI/PPGI plant

China’s Panhua Group intends to commission 100,000 tonnes/year of galvanized and pre-painted coil capacity in the Philippines by the end of this year, prior to the commissioning of its hot-end in 2025, the company told Kallanish on the sidelines of the Global Steel Summit in Dubai on 10 September.

The plant in Misamis Oriental is part of a long-planned flat steelworks in the country. The company sees a significant opportunity for import replacement. Philippines has had no flat steel capacity since the closure of the Iligan Integrated Steel Mill in 2010.

Panhua Group is an important privately-owned flat steel producer in China, especially for colour-coated sheet.

In 2025, the company plans to commission a 2.3 million tonne/year steelworks with capacity to produce both slab and billet. The firm says it aims to primarily cater to domestic demand, but may also look for export opportunities when they are profitable.

Hot rolling and cold rolling capacity is being considered for a later date. It has previously said it could eventually expand the steelworks to 10m t/y.
