Japan investigates Chinese, Korean galvanized wire

Japan has begun an anti-dumping investigation into imports of hot-dip galvanised steel wire from China and South Korea. The country also recently complained to the World Trade Organization (WTO) about Chinese duties on Japanese stainless steel, Kallanish notes.

The investigation follows an application earlier this year by domestic producers Nichia Steel Works, Hokkai Seisen, Galvert Japan and Wire Techno. The investigation is scheduled to be completed within one year.

Japan imported 40,285 tonnes of metal-coated carbon steel wire over January-April, down 10.8% year-on-year. Korea and China accounted for almost 80% of the total. Imports from Korea were down 15.7% y-o-y at 15,625t, while imports from China were down 4.6% to 16,346t.

Japan has also lodged a formal complaint at the WTO about Chinese anti-dumping duties on Japanese stainless, which were first imposed in 2019. The move marks the end of bilateral attempts to resolve the dispute. Japan believes the duties violate the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade. China currently imposes tariffs of 18.1-29% on imports of stainless steel billet and stainless steel hot rolled plate/coils imported from Japan. The duties also cover imports from the EU, Korea and Indonesia.
