Vietnam spent over US$4.6 billion importing more than 6 million tons of steel and iron in the first five months of this year, up 37.9 percent in value and 9.2 percent in volume against the same period last year, according to the country's General Statistics Office has announced.
China was the largest supplier, followed by Japan, South Korea and India, the office said.
In May alone, Vietnam imported 1 million tons of the products worth US$913 million, declining 5 per cent in volume but up 43.6 per cent in value year on year, according to the office.
In 2020, Vietnam spent nearly US$8.1 billion importing 13.4 million tons of steel and iron, down 15.2 per cent in value and 8.2 per cent in volume against 2019.
Vietnam also reported 196 new Covid-19 cases on Friday, including 185 locally transmitted and 11 imported, bringing the total tally to 9, 980, according to the country's Ministry of Health.
Among the community cases, 168 were reported in quarantine facilities or lockdown areas. In terms of localities, 95 were detected in the northern epidemic hotspot Bac Giang province, 48 in the southern Ho Chi Minh City, and 28 in the northern Bac Ninh province.
Most of them are contacts of previously confirmed cases or linked to the clusters of infections in the localities.
