South Korean steelmaker Posco started construction of a 2.5 million tonnes/year electric arc furnace (EAF) at its Gwangyang plant on 6 February, Kallanish notes.
The total investment of the project is estimated to be KRW 600 billion ($451 million), and the EAF construction is expected to be completed by the end of 2025. Official operation would begin in 2026. Posco has ordered a Consteel continuous scrap charging system and the Consterrer electromagnetic stirring system from Italian supplier Tenova (see Kallanish Passim).
Posco plans to produce steel products either directly using molten steel produced in the EAF or by applying smelting technology that mixes it with pig iron produced in blast furnaces. In addition, the company plans to use the off-gas generated during the operation of the EAF to preheat scrap steel to improve energy efficiency.
If 2.5m t/y of production is reached at this EAF, it could reduce carbon dioxide emissions of approximately 3.5m t/y compared with the company's blast furnace operation, Posco said.
