thyssenkrupp Partners with TSR on Innovative Steelmaking Technique

thyssenkrupp AG- the German steel producer and TSR recycling company has signed a letter of intent to collaborate on an innovative steel production process.

The process developed by TSR produces a high-quality recycling product with high iron content from common recovered scrap. The process will be tested at thyssenkrupp blast furnaces at the Duisburg site. The use of recycled raw material in blast furnace will reduce consumption of carbon-containing reducing agents, thus strengthening circular economy. The measure will complement thyssenkrupp’s hydrogen-based transformation path.

In order to supply the blast furnaces of thyssenkrupp Steel in Duisburg with the required material, a new industrial-scale production plant will be constructed. As of now, the production plant is scheduled to go into operation in the autumn of 2022.

Dr. Arnd Köfler, CTO thyssenkrupp Steel noted that the company, together with TSR, is launching a promising project. It is part of intermediate efforts by the company to reduce carbon emissions at existing plants, as the switch to entirely new technologies will take more time. The partnership will strengthen a circular economy and intensify its efforts to reduce carbon dioxide emissions, he added.
