Rana Gruber increases ore shipments, redirects China cargo

Rana Gruber increased iron ore hematite concentrate sales 8% on-year in the second quarter to 432,000 tonnes, while magnetite concentrate sales inched up to 28,000t, Kallanish notes.

The hematite sales correspond to seven shipments. Final settlement of these shipments will be in July (three), August (two) and September (two). As previously announced, two shipments were initially meant for China. There has been a change in the destination for one of these shipments. One shipment was redirected to India, while the other was delivered to China as planned.

Overall concentrate production increased 9% in the quarter to 427,000t.

In the first half of the year, the Norwegian miner thus increased hematite shipments by 9% on-year to 855,000t, while magnetite sales were up 27% to 56,000t. Concentrate output rose 8% to 861,000t.

In May, the miner said its board decided to scale up testing of DR-grade ore production to cater to future demand. It sees the lack of suitable ultra-high-grade, low-impurity iron ore feedstock required for the transition to direct reduced iron-electric arc furnace-route steelmaking being a critical challenge.

The Norwegian iron ore miner has so far conducted studies and minor scale tests into producing 67% Fe hematite, which meets the DR criteria.
