An accident resulting in a fire happened at Indonesian nickel smelter PT Gunbuster Nickel Industry (GNI) on 26 June 2023, according to the company's official news.
One employee was pronounced dead and six were injured. The impact on production is unknown. An investigation is being carried out to assess the main cause of the accident and the company has provided an initial report of the accident to the relevant manpower institution, Kallanish notes.
GNI is a unit of China's Jiangsu Delong Nickel Industry, which has capacity to process 13 million tonnes/year of nickel ore. This represents a nickel pig iron (NPI) production capacity of 1.8m t/y. The company conducted an official start-up on 27 December 2021, and saw its first NPI shipment from Central Sulawesi to China in January 2022.
