The U.S. weekly raw steel output recorded notable increase by 43.6% during the week ending on April 24, 2021, when matched with the comparable week in 2020. This is in accordance with the latest weekly domestic production statistics released by the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI).
The U.S. weekly domestic raw steel output totalled 1.781 million net tons (NT). The domestic mill capability utilization rate was 78.4%. It must be noted that the production had totalled only 1.240 million NT at a much lower capacity utilization rate of 55.4% during the corresponding week in 2020. Meantime, the weekly crude steel production increased marginally by 0.6% over the week. The production was 1.770 million NT during the week ended April 17, 2021.
The cumulative adjusted year-to-date U.S. raw steel production totalled 28.484 million NT through the week ending on April 24, 2021. This is up by 2.1% from the production which totalled 27.905 million NT during the same period in 2020. The capability utilization rate too recorded notable jump from 73.7% to 77.2% over the year.
The leading producer was the Southern region, with an output of 744,000 net tons. The production by Great Lakes region stood at 610,000 net tons during the week. The production by other regions (in thousand net tons) is as follows: North East-166, Midwest-189 and Western-71.
