Chinese sales of excavators to both domestic and overseas customers during February declined by 12.4% on year to 21,450 units, according to the latest data released by the China Construction Machinery Association (CCMA).
The CCMA survey among the country's 25 major excavator producers showed that out of the total, the makers' domestic sales last month reached 11,492 units, plunging by 32.6% on year.
China's switch to promoting Stage IV exhaust emission standards starting from December 1 had brought forward the demand for yellow goods, as Stage III excavators and loaders were cheaper compared with those complying with Stage IV standards, a Shanghai-based analyst said. This resulted in poor sales in the domestic market last month.
Meanwhile, during last month, China's excavator sales to overseas buyers jumped by 34% on year to 9,958 units, the CCMA data showed.
In the first two months of 2023, total excavator sales inside and outside China amounted to 31,893 units, dropping by 20.4% on year. Among the total, domestic sales accounted for 46.8% or 14,929 units, falling by 41.1% over January-February last year. On the other hand, China's exports gained by 14.9% on year to reach 16,964 units during January and February, CCMA's data showed.
As for loaders, another key item of construction machinery, domestic and overseas sales of these among the 19 manufacturers declined by 5.3% on year to 15,607 units during January-February. Among the total, domestic sales of loaders fell by 18.3% on year to 7,995 units, while sales to overseas buyers gained by 13.7% on year to equal 7,612 units during the same two months.
