Salzgitter Flachstahl GmbH, a rolling mill of the German steel group Salzgitter AG, has signed a memorandum of understanding with Canada's Baffinland Iron Mines to investigate the use of direct-shipping ore mined in Canada's Nunavut region in the production of low-carbon steel.
The two parties will select the hydrogen-based steel production most suitable for the direct reduction plant, with the aim of carbon-free production by 2033.
Salzgitter said Baffinland was chosen because its high-grade iron ore, after being crushed and screened at a steel mill, can be shipped directly to market without beneficiation or processing, and no tailings are produced.
