Toyota Europe confirmed on Monday its plant in Turkey will be its first in Europe to start producing plug-in hybrid electric vehicles and batteries, Kallanish reports.
The second-generation Toyota C-HR will be built at Toyota Motor Manufacturing Turkey (TMMT) in Sakarya. The plant, which will switch to renewable power, will also feature a new battery assembly line with capacity of 75,000 units/year, starting in December.
The new €317 million ($345.19m) investment is driving total investments in TMMT to around €2.3 billion. The capital injection will improve and enhance its production line, but also lay the foundation to meet future requirements of “production diversity and flexibility – a key factor in Toyota Europe’s business sustainability strategy,” the carmaker says.
“This project once again confirms that our production facility in Sakarya is a globally important place for Toyota,” comments Erdoğan Şahin, TMMT ceo.
The carmaker didn’t disclose capacity plans for the new PHEV production line, which will complement the C-HR HEV offering in the region.
