Indonesia's coordinating minister for maritime affairs Luhut Binsar Panjaitan announced at the country's 2023 Regional Heads National Coordination Meeting that automakers BYD and Tesla had entered the final stage of investing in building electric vehicles in Indonesia, Kallanish learns from Indonesian newspaper Bisnis.
The minister said at the meeting: “All the world's big (electric) car players will join us.” He claimed companies including BYD, Tesla, and Hyundai have all finalised agreements with Indonesia while further details cannot be disclosed.
He indicated the Indonesian government will soon announce new attractive incentive investment measures for plans related to Tesla's EV factory construction initiative in this country.
According to Bisnis, Tesla is said to want to invest in Indonesia if the government implements import duty exemption in the country, particularly in relation to fully built-up (CBU) EVs from China.
He added: "Indonesia aims to produce its first lithium battery in 2025. Our country is likely to rank among the top three globally in terms of EV and lithium battery production."
According to him, state-owned companies in Indonesia with mining licenses have established EV battery manufacturing agreements with Chinese battery firm CATL.
