Abu Dhabi-Amsterdam green hydrogen corridor to supply steelmakers

Abu Dhabi state-owned renewables developer Masdar is looking into building a green hydrogen corridor from Abu Dhabi to Europe through Amsterdam, Kallanish reports.

The company has signed a memorandum of understanding with Dutch companies Port of Amsterdam, SkyNRG, Evos Amsterdam and Zenith Energy to develop a green hydrogen supply chain. The fuel imported from the Middle East would be used for steelmaking, shipping and sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) production, as well as other off-takers in the Netherlands and Europe.

The parties intend to focus on liquid organic hydrogen carriers and liquid hydrogen, but say they will explore “several” hydrogen transportation methods to import the Abu Dhabi green hydrogen. Once in Amsterdam, the hydrogen could also meet demand from new European off-takers via pipeline, truck and barge.

Masdar launched a dedicated green hydrogen business last month aiming to operate 100 gigawatts of renewable power and 1 million tonnes/year of green hydrogen production by 2030. The company has recently committed to plans to build 4GW of electrolyser capacity in Egypt, enough to produce 480,000 t/y of green hydrogen, by 2030.

Port of Amsterdam, which is targeting imports of at least 1m t/y of green hydrogen, says that partnering with Masdar “will bring this goal that much closer to realisation”.

The parties are yet to disclose further details of the intended Abu Dhabi-Amsterdam corridor, including supply volumes and development timeline.
