According to European Commission’s announcement, it will fund Italy €1 billion to help deliver climate transition in Taranto province. This investment will be used for economic diversification and job creation in green sectors, such as renewable energy.
The Italian steelmaker Acciaierie d’Italia’s main plant in Taranto will receive part of the funds to do decarbonization. This plant is one of the most polluting plants in Europe and it has serious financial problems.
Since a third of the industrial workers in Taranto province are employed in the steel sector, 4,300 workers will be transferred to green workplaces related to clean energy and the circular economy.
