Turkey prepares for Asian steel anti-dumping probe: Yayan

Turkish Steel Producers Association general secretary Veysel Yayan says Turkey must respond quickly to steel being dumped in its market by concluding investigations against the countries of origin, Kallanish notes.

Commenting on the 2022 Turkish steel industry performance, Yayan tells Bloomberg HT Turkey that demand from the manufacturing industry is doing well, but the contraction has mainly been observed in the construction industry in the last five years.

Energy costs have increased by 50% since August while steel production has dropped over 20%, leading to a 41% decline in exports.

“Just as the EU and the USA are applying protective measures against us, we need to conclude these investigations quickly against countries that are exporting to Turkey with dumped prices and seriously consider applying safeguard measures,” Yayan says. “We have a dumping investigation study, especially for Far Eastern countries. We will endeavour to conclude this quickly in the coming months. It is not possible to export to any country in the world following 600-700% [cost] increases.”

Referring to EU and US plans to impose new customs duties on steel and aluminium imported from China, Yayan says the Turkish steel industry sincerely believes in the decarbonisation of the world and has taken measures for this purpose. Turkey’s steel industry currently produces greener production compared to the EU's steel industry, Yayan says, adding that while the EU and US are working on decarbonisation, they are sculpting the issue to their advantage.
