Pertamina, Chevron study 40,000 t/y green hydrogen project in Indonesia

Pertamina, Chevron, and Keppel Infrastructure have teamed up to study the development of green hydrogen and ammonia production in Indonesia powered by geothermal energy, Kallanish reports.

The companies said in a joint statement on Friday they will evaluate the potential for a green hydrogen facility delivering at least 40,000 tonnes/year, using 250-400 megawatts of geothermal energy initially. The hydrogen plant, likely to be located in Sumatera, could potentially be scaled up to 80,000-160,000 t/y, they add, noting that this would depend on geothermal power availability and market demand.

Indonesia is set to hold 40% of the world’s geothermal resources, which the companies see as a “reliable and stable energy source” to produce green ammonia or hydrogen. Pertamina NRE’s ceo Dannif Danusaputro says the country can play a key role in green hydrogen production in Asia.

“We are happy to partner with industry leaders, Pertamina and Chevron, to explore the first of its kind use of geothermal and other renewable energy to develop green hydrogen and green ammonia projects and support Indonesia’s energy transition efforts, as well as catalyse investment in green energy supply chain in the regions,” adds Keppel Infrastructure’s ceo Cindy Lim.

With a carbon neutrality goal by 2060, Indonesia is also promoting its electric vehicle industry, making sure to get added value for its giant nickel resources.
