The Foxconn-led MIH Consortium unveiled on Tuesday a project to develop an A-segment electric vehicle platform with modular design approach, with a three-seater demo car expected by late 2023.
The so-called Project X is described as an “open and agnostic” EV platform which will enable the BYOV (build your own vehicle) approach. It will offer mobility service providers, fleet operators, and mobility brands the opportunity to customise vehicles based on their needs at less time and cost thanks to modular design and standardised interfaces, Foxconn says.
MIH plans to release six- and nine-seater vehicle platforms in the coming years. For now, the consortium is calling its over 2,500 members to participate and “co-create” the three-seater initial platform. Technologies developed by MIH working groups including powertrain, battery systems combined with fixed charging and battery swapping technology, zonal electrical and electronic architecture (EEA), and decentralised identifier (DID) for enhanced privacy will feature in the platform.
Speaking at the annual MIH Demo Day in Taipei, Taiwan, MIH Consortium ceo Jack Cheng said the group is writing the next chapter of the mobility future and Project X is a demonstration of a new EV platform for the software, hardware and components ecosystem MIH is developing.
“We’re not only making cars but also enabling the creation of more lifestyles. Thinking beyond the vehicles of today and by adopting the latest technologies such as artificial intelligence, autonomous driving, and Web3, this vehicle platform can create shared mobility, digital health care in a post-pandemic society, entertainment, and other future applications unimaginable today,” he says. “Project X’s goal is to develop the world’s most iconic open EV platform for the innovators, by the innovators.”
Foxconn, which is the world’s largest technology manufacture and services provider, has recently confirmed its push to become a leading Contract Development and Manufacturing Organisation (CDMO) for the EV industry. The company also has its own EV line-up, with five models launched in two years. First EV deliveries are expected in H2 2023 in Taiwan, Kallanish notes.
