September global EV battery usage increased 61.2% y-o-y

According to data released by South Korean research institute SNE Research, in September 2022 the total usage volume of global electric vehicle batteries reached 54.7 gigawatt-hours, an on-year increase of about 61.2%, Kallanish learns.  

In September, CATL's EV battery usage reached 19.9 GWh, an on-year increase of about 62.8%, ranking the first in the world; LG Energy Solution's EV battery usage reached 8.8 GWh, an on-year increase of about 39.2%, ranking the second globally; BYD's EV battery usage reached 7.3 GWh, an on-year increase of about 121.7%, ranking the third.

The fourth to the tenth companies, according to this single-month ranking, are Panasonic, SK On, Samsung SDI, CALB, Gotion High-tech, Sunwoda, and Eve Energy, respectively. Chinese power battery company CALB had an on-year growth of about 222.2%. 

The report shows that during January-September this year accumulative global EV battery usage reached 341.3 GWh, an on-year increase of about 75.2%. The top three in this ranking are CATL, LG Energy Solution, and BYD, as well, with the order being the same. During this period, CATL's EV battery usage reached 119.8 GWh, an on-year increase of about 100.3%; LG Energy Solution's reached 48.1 GWh, an on-year increase of about 14.1%; BYD's reached 43.6 GWh, an on-year increase of about 177.0%. 

The fourth to the tenth according to this ranking are Panasonic, SK On, Samsung SDI, CALB, Gotion High-tech, Sunwoda, and Svolt Energy, respectively. 

SNE Research says: "SK On maintained steady sales to Hyundai Ioniq 5 and Kia EV6, and expanded its growth further with the launch of the new Ioniq 6. For Samsung SDI, its steady sales to Audi E-Tron, BMW iX, BMW i4, and FIAT 500 led the growth. LG Energy Solutions maintained double-digit growth thanks to the high popularity of Tesla's Model 3 and Model Y, and strong sales of the Volkswagen ID.4 and Ford Mustang Mach-E."
