Toyota to build new BEV with BYD in China

Toyota Motor Corporation is joining forces with BYD to build its second all-electric model in China, Kallanish learns from the Japanese carmaker.

The so-called bZ3 is a five-seater sedan BEV that promises over 600 kilometres of range and is equipped with a BYD lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery. The new model, which follows Toyota’s pioneering bZ4x BEV, was jointly developed for the Chinese market by the BYD Toyota EV Technology (BTET) joint venture.

The vehicle will be produced by and sold through the FAW Toyota dealer network, although the companies are yet to announce specific timeframes.

“The bZ3 was born out of the three companies’ collaboration and synergy in development, car manufacturing and battery technology, resulting in unprecedented new value and new experiences for customers,” Toyota says.

The carmaker, currently the largest hybrid electric vehicle producer in the world, adds it is committed to offering “more appealing products” to customers in China. It claims its electrification expertise enabled a reduction in battery degradation, with the new BEV set to ensure 90% capacity even after 10 years.
