Global Sept steel output finally rises due to China

Crude steel production among 64 countries surveyed by World Steel Association (WSA) finally saw an on-year growth in September after keeping declining since August 2021, with the combined tonnage up by 3.7% to 151.7 million tonnes. The rise was largely due to the on-year spike in steel output from China the world's top steelmaking country, according to the association's release on October 25.

The global steel output has also increased on month for the second month by another 1.4%, Mysteel Global calculated based on the WSA data.

As for China, its September crude steel output posted a 17.6% on-year growth to 87 million tonnes as against the mere 0.5% on-year uptick in the prior month. Meanwhile, the tonnage has also increased for the second month by another 3.7% on month, according to WSA.

Consequently, China's contribution to the global steel output accounted for 57.4% in September, higher than the 56.1% for the previous month, Mysteel Global learned from the official data.

Meanwhile, total crude steel output in the other 63 countries still dropped 10.5% on year to 64.7 million tonnes last month, steeper than the 8.4% on-year fall in August, the WSA data showed.

And over January-September, total crude steel output from 64 countries globally contracted by 4.3% on year to 1.41 billion tonnes, according to the data.

Among the world's top 10 steelmaking countries, both India and Iran recorded on-year gains in their steel output for September, as well as for the first nine months of this year, with the volume up by 1.8% and 6.4% on year to 9.9 million tonnes and 93.3 million tonnes respectively

On the other hand, Japan and the U.S., the world's No.3 and No.4 steelmaking countries both posted on-year declines in their output in September and during the accumulative January-September period, the WSA data suggested.
