Japan’s scrap exports fall despite Vietnam rise

Japan's steel scrap exports fell 9.11% to 495,633 tonnes in August, from 554,311t a year earlier, Kallanish notes.

According to Trade Statistics of Japan, South Korea was the largest export market, importing 198,602t of scrap from Japan, down 46.9% from 374,047t a year ago.

This was followed by Vietnam which imported 114,154t of scrap, up 33.86% from 85,281t.

Meanwhile, Taiwan imported 61,775t of scrap from Japan in August, close to double from 31,252t a year ago.

Over January to August, Japan exported 4.08 million tonnes of scrap, down 23.72% from 5.34mt a year earlier.

Korea imported 2.09mt of Japanese scrap in the eight months, down 1.44% from 2.13mt a year earlier.

Vietnam and Taiwan imported 902,655t and 368,012t of scrap respectively, down from 1.69mt and 442,712t a year earlier.
