Crude steel production in the 64 countries reporting to the World Steel Association (worldsteel) dropped for a 13th consecutive month on-year in August, by 3% on-year to 150.55 million tonnes. India continued to buck the trend but its output rose more slowly, while Chinese output rose for the first time in multiple months, Kallanish notes.
Chinese output inched up 0.5% on-year 83.87mt, with Indian output up 1.2% to 10.2mt. Japanese and South Korean output fell 7.4% and 0.4% respectively to 7.34mt and an estimated 6.08mt.
EU27 output fell 13.3% on-year in August to 9.71mt, with German and Italian production down 2.3% and 42% respectively to 2.87mt and 732,000t. France and Spain saw production fall 11% and 29% respectively to 876,000t and 786,000t.
Turkish output plummeted 21% to 2.79mt.
The US saw crude steel output fall 7% in August to 6.99mt, while Brazilian production dropped 11% to 2.84mt.
Russian output was estimated down 5.5% to 5.9mt and Ukrainian production fell 80% to 366,000t.
Global crude steel output in January-August thus fell 5% on-year to 1.25 billion tonnes.
