US Steel said its No. 8 blast furnace at its Gary Works steel mill in Indiana, which has a raw material capacity of 1.5 million short tons per year, was stopped on September 7. The restart date is still not sure.
One of US Steel's two blast furnaces at its Mon Valley Works in Pennsylvania is undergoing scheduled maintenance that began on September 3 and was expected to last 30 days. The blast furnace has a raw steel production capacity of 1.4 million short tons per year, and the stopped operation will take out roughly 115,000 short tons of raw steel production.
US Steel's earnings in the third quarter were expected to drop by 74% year on year and fall by 46% from the second quarter.
