Swiss-based mining and commodity giant Glencore in interested in adding lithium to the metals in which in trades, Kallanish has learned.
The lithium trading team would be part of Glencore’s zinc-copper business, if the company decides to add lithium, Reuters has reported, citing unnamed sources. Glencore declined comment on the report.
Lithium is in growing demand for electric vehicle batteries
Glencore does not own lithium mines but produces copper, nickel, and cobalt that it calls “commodities of the future” for their use in EV batteries and renewable infrastructure as the world moves toward a greener economy.
Last May, Glencore announced a partnership with Ontario-based Li-Cycle Holdings Corp that is developing a lithium-ion battery recycling operation in Canada and the United States. It is also working with Britishvolt in England to develop a new battery recycling plant.
