Key Chinese steelmaking provinces post falls in steel output by Jul

Over January-July, 7 out of 10 top steelmaking provinces across China posted on-year falls in their crude steel production, according to new data released by the country's National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) on August 17.

The drop was mainly because Chinese steelmakers had cut production in response to weak steel demand from end-users and negative profits they had suffered, according to sources.

Specifically, North China's Hebei province maintained its position as the country's top steel-producing province, with its crude steel output reaching 129.9 million tonnes, or easing by 6.9% on year, the NBS data showed.

Hebei accounted for 21.3% of China's total crude steel production over January-July, while its contribution to the country's total edged up by 0.2 percentage point compared with that in the first half of 2022, according to the data.

For July alone, Hebei saw its crude steel output increase by 2.7% on year but 9.9% lower on month to 18.6 million tonnes.

Following Hebei, East China's Jiangsu and Northeast China's Liaoning provinces remained as the country's second- and third-largest steelmaking bases among 31 Chinese provinces and autonomous regions by July, with their crude steel output reaching 71.6 million tonnes and 43.2 million tonnes respectively, despite their on-year declines of 3% and 8%.

Over January-July, China's total crude steel output slipped by 6.4% on year to 609.3 million tonnes, and for July alone, the volume also eased by 6.4% on year to 81.4 million tonnes, according to data released by NBS.
